Beautiful Loser

As we look back at the films of 2015, let’s not forget, let’s not forget, Joe Dirt 2: Beautiful Loser. Dollar Theater die-hards may have missed this one since it was released directly to Crackle in July. This white trash wet dream begins with Joe having settled down and begun a family with Brandy. But when his trailer home is whisked into the atmosphere in a tornado, Joe finds himself landing not in Oz but in 1965!

The plot is fundamentally senseless, and the cameos are largely disappointing. But if you’re like me, you go into this one with such low expectations that it can’t possibly fail. I’ll offer three highlights from the movie that I believe are largely representative:

1) Joe tries to become a lumberjack, but at lunchtime all of the other loggers (and even one’s sister) surround Joe and fart upon him. (Note: This is a long scene.)

2) Joe meets an early, teenage incarnation of Lynyrd Skynyrd (in 1965) and tries to tell them to avoid air travel. More importantly, he convinces them that the perfect length for a tune is nine minutes and nine seconds.

3) Kevin Farley (brother of Chris Farley), acting as a henchman to bad guy Mark McGrath, shoves seventeen vodka-soaked Tampons up his ass.

Do with those what you will. But as stupid as it is, I can’t maintain a poor opinion of a movie that has the taste to take as its subtitle a Seger song. In the end, at least it’s got a great soundtrack.
